I know I’m probably a bit behind the eight ball but I finally sat down to watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel the other day. And for someone who’s never really felt the draw to India, now I would love to go (which shows how clever the movie is!).

From the scenes to the characters to the moments of quiet reflection, I loved this movie. I loved the flaws and the strengths of each character, I loved their growth, but most of all, I loved the dialogue between them. Very clever writing.

For example, Evelyn to Muriel’s conversation:

Evelyn: Nothing here has worked out quite as I expected.

Muriel: Most things don’t. But sometimes what happens instead is the good stuff

But the dialogue that kept with me after the movie ended comes from Sonny, the hotel’s owner:

Everything will be all right in the end… if it’s not all right then it’s not yet the end.

Such positive, beautiful thinking. And that’s how I write. And it’s the books l like to read. The books where it’s all right in the end. I hate getting to the end of a book and thinking ‘Are you kidding me? That’s four hours of my life I’m not getting back!’

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m a ‘happy ever after girl.’

Not that, necessarily, everyone has to end up totally happy but the end needs to make sense and make me feel good – like it’s all right for the characters (or it will be all right). I love the ending to ‘The Hunger Games’ for example, for that very reason. What sort of endings do you prefer?

I agree, the end needs to make sense and make me feel good.
I like a live happily ever after as well but also love the excitement of knowing there is more to come!
